Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has said that he will oppose the move by the government to privatise 11 state corporations.

The government on Monday listed 11 corporations that are set to be privatised.

In a statement, Omtatah claimed that the move to sell state corporations has been endorsed by the International Monetary Fund.

"We will oppose the programme the International Monetary Fund has endorsed for the government to sell at least 10 public corporations, including KICC, to private entities," he said.

Corporations to be privatised include International Convention Centre (KICC), Kenya Literature Bureau, National Oil Corporation, Kenya Seed Company Limited, Mwea Rice Mills, Western Kenya Rice Mills Limited, Kenya Pipeline Company, New Kenya Cooperative Creameries, Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers Limited, Rivatex East Africa Limited and Numerical Machining Complex.

The government revealed that one of the reasons it was selling the Kenya Literature Bureau and KICC was because the two parastatals needed to be incorporated into limited companies.

On the other hand, National Oil Company is being privatised largely because of poor financial performance.

The government is also seeking to sell the corporation because of negative working capital and low liquidity.

Kenyans and leaders have come out to express their disappointment over the move to privatise state corporations.

Azimio leader Raila Odinga said the move is ill-advised and that the corporations should not be sold.

"The government wants to sell state corporations, Kenya Pipeline Corporation and National Oil Corporation are among them. KPC is a strategic investment that should not be sold under any circumstances. But the government wants to sell it," he said.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna said that the government should hold a  referendum for Kenyans to make the decision.

Sifuna said leaders cannot take assets belonging to Kenyans, without the people having a say in it.

"If ever there was a matter over which a referendum was mandatory then it's the sale of National Assets like KICC, KPC and the others. One generation of greedy leaders cannot just strip a Nation of its assets without reference to the people.

"On this one, even our children should vote because KICC is not even our property as the current generation of adults!" Sifuna said.
