Hundreds of ex-police officers were on Friday morning turned away at the GSU headquarters after appearing for nonexistent jobs.

The jobseekers, mostly deserters and those dismissed had been enticed by a social media post to being absorbed back into the National Police Service.

From as early as 7 am, the ex-cops trooped to the base armed with documents and camped at the main gate only to be turned away after it emerged they had responded to a fake call.

The viral post required them to report to the paramilitary base for recruitment.

“If you know of any police officer alifutwa kazi (dismissed) or deserted and is willing kurudi kazi afike Ruaraka kesho treat as urgent if willing, GSU hq,” the post read.

A video clip seen by the Star showed the jobseekers, in their numbers, entering and leaving the facility.

Police spokesperson Resila Onyango said they had already flagged the post warning those targeted against falling for it.

“We saw the post and issued an alert asking the ex-officers to ignore it,” she told the Star.

“Police do not communicate in such a manner and if at all their services were required we would have issued a signal to the effect.”

The job scam comes at a time when the planned nationwide police recruitment has been rescheduled to early next year.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kindiki Kithure made the revelation when he appeared before the MPs on September 30.

“We shall be conducting the recruitment early next year…we cannot have it this year, we are late,” Kindiki said without revealing more details.

The CS was responding to a question from a member of the National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity about the exercise and plans in place to address the rampant cases of bribery during recruitment.
