Kirinyaga enhances water supply to villages to spur farming

The county is currently undertaking 66 projects to increase access to both domestic and irrigation water.

Kirinyaga county has stepped up efforts to enhance supply of water for irrigation and domestic use in the villages, to spur small scale farming.

The county has initiated about 66 projects to increase access to water for both domestic and small scale farming.

The access to water by small scale farmers is expected boost agricultural productivity and in turn improve the area's economy.

One of the areas set to benefit from the projects is South Ngariama in Mwea constituency, where the county is set to launch phase two of the Mugamba Ciura-South Ngariama water project.

The project, which is expected to be complete by July next year, will see water supply extended to Mugamba Ciura and South Ngariama areas.

Governor Anne Waiguru on Saturday distributed pipes and assorted fittings to Kirimara and Musagondi Irrigation Water projects.

Waiguru said the initiative is part of the county’s plan to enhance agricultural production.

Approximately 3,000 people from Nyangati ward are expected to benefit from the pipes.

 “We are committed to ensuring that every home has piped water in line with our vision of ensuring access to clean water by all households," Waiguru said.

"This will improve the county's hygienic standards and boost food security."

Waiguru who is the chairperson of the Council of Governors said Sh115 million has also been set aside for rehabilitation of Mwea rice irrigation canals to enhance rice production.

Mwea Irrigation scheme which covers over 30,000 acres and benefits over 18,000 farmers, provides about 113,000 metric tonnes of rice annually.

The governor said the planned construction of South Ngariama-Murinduko and Nyamindi Dams in Mwea, and Gikumbo Dam in Ndia will increase land under irrigation and make the county more food secure.

“Irrigation plays a significant role in enhancing farming by allowing year-round crop production and mitigating drought which results in more returns for farmers and stability in food prices."
