Nominated MP Sabina Chege has opened up on how the Azimio coalition lost out on the chance to be the majority in the National Assembly after the August 2022 general elections.
Speaking over the weekend, Chege said after the elections, Azimio presented to the National Assembly a coalition agreement that was not clear.
Without substantiating the claim she said the agreement did not have clarity on many aspects including the terms and conditions of operation.
The legislator noted that because of this some parties within the coalition also left immediately after and joined Kenya Kwanza.
Chege said that this further weakened Azimio and this automatically made Kenya Kwanza coalition the majority in the National Assembly
"We did a coalition agreement, which was not very clear because if it was clear, we would have been the majority party as Azimio coalition in the National Assembly.
"But when the papers were presented in the National Assembly, it was not clear what was the terms and conditions of the coalition. That's how we lost being the majority and some political parties left immediately after the 2022 hotly contested election that we really gave out everything," she said.
The nominated MP also said they lost the majority, but they still felt mistreated within the Azimio coalition after some of their earlier agreements were not fulfilled.
She said the coalition favoured only ODM and Wiper parties because their party leaders sat at the decision-making table.
"In the allocation of positions in the National Assembly, the ones that go to the minority party, we were meant to have at least two chairmen and four vice chairmen, but we only go to one chairman, no vice," Sabina said.
"We didn't even have our representative as Jubilee at the Budget Committee. No, those important committees where decisions are made. And so we kept on pushing and asking we need to have a sitting as the elected members of parliament but I think he was tired."
The nominated MP added Jubilee members felt like orphans within the Azimio coalition.
Jubilee has two factions, one of which has broken ranks with Azimio.
