The Kenya Kwanza government has vowed to fight against extrajudicial killings because they are a violation of the constitution according to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.

The CS was speaking in Wajir county where he presided over the operationalization of Kotulo Sub-County, Tarbaj Constituency.

"The Government of Kenya does not condone extrajudicial killings because such killings are not only illegal but a violation of the Constitution and other international laws. The days of enforced disappearances are long gone," he said.

His remarks come a few days after an Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) report revealed that at least 128 cases of extrajudicial killings had been recorded in Kenya in the past 11 months. The cases were recorded between Oct 2022 and Aug 2023.

The reports state that the cases of torture and related violations (TRVs) doubled within the period under review compared to the previous years, from 232 to 482.

Kindiki, in his remarks, commended the security officers who were working tirelessly and diligently to fight insecurity in the North Eastern Region.

He noted that some of the officers are killed while others are injured by the armed criminals, yet no prize is enough to honour our officers for their diligence.

"They (officers) are patriotic men and women who love their country. I pay tribute to all these officers who work in the difficult terrain of North Eastern," Kindki added.

He further stated that the government will go out of its way to equip officers with modern equipment to protect them against armed criminals.

He said the equipment will also enable them to protect our citizens and their property, calling on Kenyans to work hand in hand with security officers in taming crime.

"I urge all citizens to work with the security officers and resist attempts by terror groups to radicalise the youth into violent extremism.

"Terrorism remains a key national security concern and the Government will triumph over terror. Parents must remain vigilant and counsel their children to resist radicalisation or recruitment into terror groups," the CS said.
