Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has said it is the obligation of Kenyans to question the government over its mandate.
Speaking in an interview with Spice FM on Monday, Ahmednasir said Kenyans are used to letting opposition chief Raila Odinga fight for them yet it is not his job.
“The problem in Kenya is that Kenyans think it is only Raila’s job to put the government in check. When he puts it in check, everybody rallies around him. The NGOs, the women's organisations, the small businesses and the government feel the weight of the people,” Ahmednasir said.
He went on to say that when Raila goes on mute, citizens also remain silent instead of coercing the government to do its job.
“If Raila keeps quiet everybody disperses. People should realize that is not just Raila's job. It's every Kenyan job to audit the government, to put pressure on it, to question its decision and even to demonstrate,” Ahmednasir said.
“If we become very active and demonstrate our civic duty as Kenyans, then the government will feel the pressure.”
The Lawyer added that Kenyans should not wait for the elected leaders to defend them instead that should be their duty.
“The parliament is not a representative of anybody. We should not leave these things to Members of Parliament or the government. There is a civic duty on us as Kenyans to question the government and put pressure,” he said.
Recently, Ahmednasir condemned some cabinet secretaries who were ridiculing Kenyans on the issue of high fuel prices.
In a tweet on his X social handle, he said most Kenyans were struggling with the current cost of living but some government employees were laughing at them.
"The average Kenyan is really struggling! These are truly hard times! And I really don't get why H.E Ruto's employees are laughing and ridiculing the poor," he said.
The senior counsel termed the action as heartless gloating, questioning where the empathy of the leaders went.
"I just don't get this heartless gloating! Where is empathy for the poor...the downtrodden? Ahmednasir posed.
