Senate Majority leader Aaron Cheruiyot has dismissed claims that both Houses of Parliament are captives of the executive.

Speaking on Wednesday, Cheruiyot said that has never been the case, despite President William Ruto’s party UDA having a majority in the Senate and the National Assembly.

He said it is a misconception people have about the president, whom he described as a man who listens to all before making a conclusion.

“It is a notion people have carried for so long even before he became President. I don’t know if it’s because of his personality that people feel he is a strong character who takes a position,” Cheruiyot said on Spice FM.

“What I know having served William Ruto the man and even as president is that, his decision-making process is very consultative even during our days as a quasi-opposition outfit he'd open the meeting and say these are the issues, what do you think?”

He said the only time Ruto overruled them after discussions cannot be more than twice, out of all meetings he has been part of.

The senator said rarely does Ruto force them into doing what he wants done.

"He says I've listened to you but there is something I’m seeing that you cannot see allow me to pursue and people will say it’s okay," he said.

“The only pressure I have endured as Majority leader and him as our party leader sometimes is the issue of time alone.”

According to Cheruiyot, this is in terms of passing Bills in Parliament and not how they are formulated by Parliament.
