The National Council for Persons with Disabilities is in the final stages of rolling out the self-registration process on the eCitizen portal.

This will put an end to the struggle of Kenyans visiting NCPWD county offices to get registered.

Once rolled out, people who want to register will be able to do so from the comfort of their cell phones with the requisite documents.

According to a statement by NCPWD, an approved registration will result in the generation of a disability registration certificate.

Individuals will then be free to download the certificate whenever they wish to use it for a given service.

“The council has also ensured that its digitisation processes conform with the country's data protection laws,” the statement said.

The council is currently registering persons with disabilities in the new registration system.

The exercise, according to the council, also provides an opportunity to clean up records in the old registration system.

This also gives the government the opportunity to have a verifiable database of all assessed and registered persons with disabilities down to the ward level in the counties.

“There has been a delay in producing new cards for those with waiting cards, as the council continues to restructure its processes to align with directives by the President on systems' inter-linkages, digitising government services and generation of a unique digital identity for all citizens,” it said.

The council said as a member of the National Digital Identity Technical Committee, disability registration status will form part of their digital identity once the programme is rolled out by the President.
