Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has no details on the amount of money transacted in the country from the crypto project Worldcoin, Governor Kamau Thugge has said.

Thugge said as CBK they are not in a position to monitor foreign exchange transactions that happen in commercial banks.

"We are not aware of this because it takes place within the banking system and not with the CBK," he said.

The Governor was responding to a question by Kisumu East MP Shakeel Shabbir who had alleged that two Kenyans bought shares in US dollars worth Sh1.4 billion ($10 million) each from Worldcoin.

The amount of foreign exchange in commercial banks, he said, is “significant” amounting to a trillion dollars.

“There are a lot of transactions in dollars such that it is very difficult to see the $10 million (Sh1.5 billion) in such a large market,” he noted.

The money, Shakeel added, was transferred into the country through Mpesa.

But, Thugge who appeared as a witness before a parliamentary committee conducting a probe on the suspended Worldcoin activity held that CBK does not monitor Mpesa transactions.

He only pointed out that the mobile banking service handles at least Sh35 trillion transactions in a year.

The Committee chaired by Narok West MP Gabriel Tongoyo began its business last week and has 42 days to complete the task.
