A woman has died in a tragic road accident involving a vehicle belonging to the United Nations along the busy Nairobi – Mombasa highway.

Athi River South sub-county police commander Jos Mudavadi said the deceased was a Czech national and wife to the vehicle’s driver.

She died on the spot during the accident that occurred at Kwa Muambi Bridge at about 1.30pm on Saturday.

The incident was reported to Kyumbi police station as a fatal road traffic accident report at 2.20 pm Saturday.

“An unknown driver was driving a lorry heading towards Mombasa direction. On reaching the scene of the accident, he collided head-on with an oncoming motor vehicle, a Mitsubishi Pajero driven by 43-year-old Moroccan national working with United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction,” Mudavadi told the Star hours after the accident.

Mudavadi said the UN’s staffer was driving his official car when the incident occurred.

“As a result of the accident, the driver sustained a fracture on his left arm while his passenger, a Czech national who is his wife died on the spot,” he said.

The police boss said four other people, three men and a woman sustained serious injuries in another accident that occurred at the same scene almost simultaneously with the first one.

Two of the injured men were drivers of both vehicles involved in the accident.

“Almost simultaneously with this incident, another motor vehicle, Scania trailer moving from Mombasa to Nairobi collided head-on with a FAW trailer from the opposite direction. This happened after the Nairobi-bound driver swerved to the right in a bid to avoid ramming into the vehicles involved in the first accident,” Mudavadi explained.

He said as a result of the second accident, both drivers sustained serious head injuries.

“A female passenger also sustained serious head injuries while another one, a man, sustained chest injuries,” Mudavadi said.

Mudavadi said his traffic officers from Kyumbi police station processed the scene and cleared the traffic snarl-up on the busy highway. The accident led to the highway’s obstruction of hours.

He said the body of the deceased was moved to Machakos Funeral Home while those who sustained injuries were rushed to a hospital for medication.

The wreckages were towed to Kyumbi police station awaiting inspection.
