Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has assured opposition governors that their security will be restored soon.

He said their bodyguards were withdrawn ahead of the three-day anti-government protests on July 17 because more officers were needed on the ground to beef up security across the country.

"We had a shortage of officers and we needed more officers and the people who were planning were having some of the officers. So we needed to get them to come and fight them and then go back," he said.

He said a review of the conduct of those whose firearms were withdrawn is also being conducted for the purposes of determining their suitability to continue holding them.

"When there is good behaviour, we shall review and we are reviewing. And it's not just governors, even presidential candidates, even running mates, even senior people or former vice presidents, including ministers. Everybody who needs to carry a firearm your temperament must be right."

The DP was speaking on Friday at the Eldoret Sports Club when he officially closed the 10th Devolution Conference.

The security detail of Azimio leader Raila Odinga, that of four governors and over 50 MPs was withdrawn two days ahead of the three-day demonstrations called by Raila from Wednesday, July 19 to Friday, July 21.

Gachagua reiterated his previous sentiments that the security detail will be restored if and when indications point to an end to the anti-government protests.

"If these demonstrations are over and there are no issues you can just get your officers back and continue with life and from what I can see I think it looks like it's over," he said.

"Once we are sure it is over, you'll have your officers back and you carry on with your job. I think we are being fair so that officers are dignified and governors are provided security."

Meanwhile, Gachagua asked governors to be vocal about receiving a revenue share on time just as they were vocal when there were delays.

The national government disbursed Sh370 billion in June for the 2022-23 Financial Year as an equitable share of revenue raised nationally.

“We want to ask you governors to be fair to us, when these disbursements were late, you were shouting everywhere about it. Why don’t you spare only two minutes to say that now you are receiving money on time? He posed.

“If you were complaining you did not have to Kenyans, when you get it, you have a duty also to inform them that you are getting it.”
