Kenya, China to foster cultural exchange through film

Kenya and China have partnered to launch the China-Kenya film festival 2023 which will uplift the film industry and nature artistic talents.

The collaboration underscores the shared commitment of Kenya and China to utilize their film industries as powerful tools for economic growth and understanding.

The event which happened on Monday at Two Rivers Mall, was attended by dignitaries from both nations who convened to celebrate the partnership.

Sports CS Ababu Namwamba who participated in the launch said the initiative will strengthen international film exchange and cooperation and also help promote the Talanta hela initiative.

“China and Kenya have a long-standing history of cultural exchange, and it is with great enthusiasm that we embark on this journey of collaboration in the film industry,” Namwamba said.

“As we celebrate the Chinese film festival, let us recognize the potential of the events as this to build bridges of understanding, exchange and cooperation between the two nations.”

He said the film industry employs many youths worldwide helping in addressing the unemployment rate.

“Through cooperation with China, am convinced that our youths will be able to learn more skills that will improve their technical know-how as far as film is concerned, so as to provide excellent talent for high-quality development of films on both sides,” the CS said.

“By cooperating in film, we can promote mutual understanding of our cultures, laying the foundation for international film exchange and promoting the exchange of human civilization between Kenya and China.”

China Film Administration executive deputy director general Mao You said the signed MoU between Kenya and China will strengthen film exchange and cooperation between the two countries.

He said it will also open a new chapter for the future development of films.

"We hope film festivals will become a new starting point for deepening China-Kenya film exchanges and cooperation, which will further inject new momentum into the people-to-people exchanges between the two countries and make new contributions to promoting a high-level China- Africa community of shared future," Mao You said.

Kenya Film Commission CEO Timothy Owase said the partnership will provide a way of exchanging cultural practices through stories told by film.

He added that it will also foster the advancement of human civilization and cultural diversity worldwide.

"Film has the potential to transcend boundaries, break down barriers and bring people together. The film industry provides an avenue for nations to showcase their diverse cultures, traditions and values," Owase said.

"By working jointly and promoting collaboration between Kenya and China, we can create a profound impact on our respective societies and the global film industry."

He further said that through the collaboration, Kenya not only preserves its culture for generations to come but also creates a mutual understanding and appreciation between people.

"Through film, we can offer audiences a unique insight into the lives, dreams, and aspirations of our citizens. By telling our stories authentically, we bridge gaps and find common ground, promoting peace, tolerance, and unity in the world," Owase said.
