98 percent of learners say internet has met their needs – report

Following the launch of Internet connectivity to schools, learners across the country have embraced the technology which they say it has enhanced studies.

98 percent of learners said since the introduction of Internet in their schools, most of their needs have been met.

This is according to a report launched by the Ministry of Education in partnership with UNESCO, Huawei and Information Communication Authority (ICT).

The report further states that 84 percent of students said Internet makes learning more exciting.

"Internet makes learning interesting because by just looking at the books, you will only see photos but for the internet, it provides access to videos which make it more of a reality to us learners to understand," John Mwitoria a student from Maragima Primary School said.

In addition, 73 percent acknowledged that it makes complex ideas easier to understand while 54 percent added that learning has been more engaging with the Internet.

23 percent said it makes learning more fun and 13 percent said it increases class attendance.

It is reported that schools have saved around Sh120,000 for mobile data bundles.

Speaking during the launch of the report, Education PS Belio Kipsang said the report will guide the government as it seeks to expand internet connectivity to all schools in the country.

"The report has clearly found that Internet enhances access to and quality of education for learners in rural areas particularly girls and those with disabilities," Kipsang said.

"I want to thank Huawei through their TECH4ALL initiative and UNESCO for their collaboration with the Government to provide sustainable Internet connectivity to governments fiber-optic network and for supporting this important evaluation report."

ICT Authority Director Joshua Opondo assured that the plan to extend internet to all schools in the country is underway.

"The government has already completed a detailed plan for the expanding fibre connectivity across the country, with schools intended to be a primary beneficiary of the program," Opondo said.

Deputy CEO of Huawei Steven Zhang said the report provides important insights as to how internet can be connected to schools for greater impact.

"One of Huawei's core values is Reflection, as we believe only through reflection can we improve and achieve greater success in the future," Zhang said.

"This is also why we're keen to organise the creative competition, so that the students can also reflect on the impact the internet has on their learning."
