The Kenya Kwanza government has advertised tenders for the construction of 6,710 affordable housing units.

On Wednesday, the State Department for Housing and Urban Development advertised the tenders which are in different constituencies.

State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed said that the government is rolling out the affordable housing programme’s 200 per constituency project as promised by President William Ruto.

“With 290 constituencies across the country, this project has the potential to create 58,000 housing units, fostering localised economic growth and employment opportunities at the constituency level,” he said.

Hussein emphasized that the housing pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) not only aims to improve the quality of life for people but also serves as an economic stimulus, promoting enterprise growth and job creation.

Each housing unit constructed will generate three to five direct jobs and up to eight indirect jobs.

In June, President Ruto announced that 178 out of 290 subcounties have been given the green light to construct the units.

"I want to tell Kenyans that we are on course in our plan for the affordable housing with 178 subcounties being given a green light, " he said.

Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga explained to the president that all 290 constituencies have land available for the affordable housing programme.

"However before constructions, we have to go to the ground and asses the land to identify whether they are fit for the programme," he said.

Out of the 178, 29 subcounties are awaiting the groundbreaking ceremony.

"In the 29 constituencies, we have completed assessment and are going to complete evaluation this week, award contracts and go ahead for groundbreaking," Hinga added.
