Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir on Wednesday met key stakeholders in Nairobi to finalise plans that will see his county benefit from port revenues.

This is after President William Ruto said that the county is entitled to revenue from port operations.

The President spoke over the weekend during his Coastal tour.

He said it will be in line with the constitutional principle that host counties draw benefit from the natural resources found therein.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir and Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen on August 2, 2023.

The Governor met both National Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen in Nairobi to expedite the implementation of the initiative.

Nassir proposed to set up the revenue framework by way of charging a levy on shipping lines for the management of sewerage, solid waste and other harmful effluents from ships that dock at the port of Mombasa.

"This framework is supported in section 2 (g) which provides for county governments to provide all services related to refuse removal, refuse dumps and solid waste disposal and shall take effect by way of legislation," he said.

Nassir said the move is groundbreaking for Mombasa and is the result of months of political lobbying and technical research.
