President William Ruto has told ODM leader Raila Odinga that protests will not lower the prices of unga.

Speaking in Kericho, the president said picketing using Sufuria will also not help in lowering the cost of living.

Ruto said they should instead use that time to go farm to lower the cost of maize flour.

"Niwaulize watu wa Kericho, hata mtu akiweka sufuria kwa kichwa siku ngapi, bei ya unga itapungua? Hata tukifanya maandamano mwaka moja. Mtu asipofanya maandamano aende shambani alime si bei ya unga itakuja chini?" he posed.

This loosely translates to, "Let me ask you the people of Kericho, will the cost of maize flour be lowered by protesting with sufuria on the head? Even if it means protesting for a year? If someone stops demonstrating, goes to the farm and till the land, will the price of maize flour fail to drop?".

During the address, Ruto said he was open for talks as long as it is to better the lives of Kenyans.

He added that a handshake will not be part of the engagement because it is what plunged the country into the economic crisis we are currently experiencing.

"The people don't want a handshake. It is what brought us the problem we have and got into debts," Ruto said.

The head of state said it is the responsibility of Kenyans to protect the country from violence and anarchy.
