The Teachers Service Commission has said it will need Sh134bn to implement its 5-year strategic plan.

Speaking during the launch of the five-year plan, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia said they will need the cash to make the plan a success.

“For the successful implementation of this plan for the next five years, the commission will require a total of over Sh134 billion to get funds for this stand and to see JSS go through and CBC implemented,” Macharia said.

In its plan, TSC is set to recruit 111,870 teachers over the next five years and improve quality teaching through training.

In the 2023-24 Financial Year Budget, TSC was allocated a total of Sh316.7 billion under which Sh4.8 billion was for the recruitment of 20,000 intern teachers and Sh2.5 billion for the recruitment of teachers.

To accomplish its relevant sustainable goals for quality education, TSC will ensure there is an equitable distribution of teachers across the country.

It will also develop and implement appropriate programmes for continuous professional development for teachers.

In addition, the commission will set appropriate standards for persons entering the teaching service.

Macharia said the Commission is not only committed to appropriate monitoring and evaluation tools but also prudent to the utilisation of the allocated resources.

“We will mainstream gender equality strategies in teaching service to ensure gender equality is enhanced,” Macharia said.

To enhance the good health and well-being of teachers, the commission is set to mainstream safety measures at the workplace and develop policies and practices that promote the well-being of employees.

“To initiate decent work and economic growth, we will ensure compliance with the statutory and policy framework including the Constitution, relevant laws, rules and regulations on labour and employment,” Macharia said.

The commission also seeks to embrace corporate governance principles to improve governance and leadership.

Teachers will also be sensitized and trained on the protection of children against abuse, exploitation, and other forms of violence.

To improve the goals, TSC will strengthen linkages through partnerships with state and nonstate stakeholders.

It will also cross border institutions for the realisation of the Commission’s mandate and mobilisation of resources.
