The family of young city lawyer Abdullahi Hassan heaved a sigh of relief over the weekend after he returned home safely following a brief abduction.

The news of Hassan's abduction was relayed by the Association of Muslim Lawyers, saying he was grabbed in Sultan Hamud after he left a fuel station.

Hassan’s father was also in the car when he was taken by his assailants. It was around 4:30pm on Saturday.

A white Toyota Hilux pick-up pulled in front of his car, and three men yanked him out and sped off with him to an unknown location.

“Abdullahi Hassan, a 26-year-old lawyer, was abducted along Sultan Hamud leaving Ilade oil petrol station at 4.30pm. White pick-up Hilux stopped them, removed father from the car and took Abdul,” a social media post raising the alarm said.

He wore a cream shirt, navy-blue trousers and black Adidas shoes with white stripes on the side, the family said.

Condemning the incident, Law Society president Eric Theuri said that he hoped the case was a regular criminal occurrence but not a slow return of the enforced disappearances allegedly perpetrated by law enforcement elements.

hope this young man is found safe and sound. And may this not be a resumption of the culture of disappearance,” Theuri posted in response to the news.

The family was relieved when the man walked back home after being freed by his abductors.

Without giving many details, the family said the police responded swiftly to their plea, tracing the criminals and releasing Hassan.

They suggested that the assailants were regular carjackers and not linked to the police.

“We wish to inform everyone that Abdullahi Hassan is now home safe. The police worked tirelessly to track down the assailants who are known carjackers and have since returned him home safe. The family wishes to thank you all for your support and wishes,” they said.

When reached by the Star, the family said it was not willing to speak about the case at the moment as the young man had just returned home.

The case of Hassan brings to mind the disappearance of Mwenda Mbijjiwe who went missing in 2021 and his whereabouts are yet to be known despite frantic searches and pleas by his family.

Ethiopian businessman Samson Teklemichael was abducted from his pricey Bentley kicking and screaming in the middle of Oloitoktok Road in Nairobi in November 2021. He is still missing.
