Narok County will incorporate para-sports during the Kilgoris Classic set for next month, county’s sports director Benson Kariuki has said.

Kariuki said inviting para-sports athletes will help in their preparations ahead of the Africa Para Games set for September in Accra, Ghana as well as the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.

He observed that Narok county has abundant sports talents, especially in middle-distance running, and the Kilgoris Classic will offer an opportunity for upcoming sports persons to showcase their prowess.

“Narok county is the home of middle distance running, producing top athletes like David Rudsiha, the Manangoi brothers of Elijah and George, John Litei and Wycliffe Kinyamal among others," said Kariuki.

"Unfortunately, we have not had any serious sporting activity in Trans Mara to celebrate these athletes and to nurture new ones. This Classic will also offer an opportunity for these established athletes to inspire the youngsters,” he said.

Among the sports lined up are track and field as well as a tri-cycle competition for the para-athletes.

Para sports coach Samuel Lemurt, a former tennis international said: “I used to stay in Nairobi but I had to come back to my county to support sports."

"Having represented Kenya at international events, I know the challenges facing para-sports. I saw a lot of potential here in Narok and I had to come and offer direction by nurturing young talent."
