Kenya, Djibouti to introduce direct flights to boost trade – Ruto

President William Ruto has said that Kenya and Djibouti will have direct flights to ease trade relations between the two countries.

Speaking at a press conference in Djibouti, Ruto said the lack of direct flights was an impediment to trade.

"As a solution, we have reached an agreement to focus on generating demand from both sides, aiming to resume direct flights; including the review of the existing Bilateral Air Service Agreement, to address existing challenges," he said.

Ruto said the restoration of air connectivity will have a profound impact on enhancing trade.

The President also announced that Kenya has finalized the process of removing visa restrictions for Djibouti citizens.

Ruto said visa-free visits will people-to-people interaction between the two countries.

He noted that this will also boost trade between the two countries.

"To promote people-to-people interactions, trade, and investment, I am firmly committed to eliminating the barriers imposed by visa requirements for Djiboutian citizens traveling to Kenya," he said.

Ruto added that the two countries have decided to expand the value and volume of commercial relations.

He said they have taken the initiative to establish a Joint Business Council.

The President said the council will work towards synergizing trade missions and facilitating improved market access.

"I strongly encourage members of the business community from both countries to actively engage with their counterparts, particularly within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)," he said.
