Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has condemned Members of Parliament over the chaos that erupted on Thursday leaving nominated MP Sabina Chege injured.

Chege was allegedly hit with a bottle during the chaos that erupted following a ruling on her removal as the deputy minority whip.

Gachagua said no man is allowed to fight women over issues that can be peacefully sorted out.

“Why did you beat Sabina Chege? We stopped beating women, even those whose dowry we've paid, we don't fight them. When you fight women physically, what kind of a man are you?” Gachagua posed.

He said it is embarrassing when a man beats up a woman.

“When you beat a woman and you are a man, it is very embarrassing. These are cowards. How do you go to fight women physically to sort out issues that are there?” Gachagua asked.

“You should fight with Sabina politically. She says she is a party leader and the other one says he is a party leader. Why don’t you divide yourselves to know who is the party leader? When you sent for her to be beaten, does that make you a party leader?”

He said Azimio La Umoja members are desperate and living in denial.

The ruling by Speaker of the Senate Moses Wetang'ula led to chaos characterised by MPs menacing each other and ignoring calls for order.

Wetang'ula retained Chege as the whip, citing a court order which suspended Azimio's decision to axe her from the post.

He was forced to order a 15-minute recess after which he suspended seven MPs from sittings, including Chege.

"The following members having flouted the Standing Orders of the House by menacing each other, shouting at the chair and making all manner of unprintable utterances, I will invoke the provisions of Standing Order 107 (a)," Wetang'ula said.

They include Millie Odhiambo (Suba North), Rozaah Buyu (Kisumu West), TJ Kajwang (Ruaraka) and Chege who were suspended for two weeks while Malindi MP Fatuma Mnyazi and Catherine Omanyo (Busia) will both serve a five-day suspension.

Machakos Women Representative Joyce Kamene was suspended for two sittings.
