Ex-Mungiki leader Maina Njenga released on conditional bond

Nakuru Principal Magistrate Kipkurui Kibelyon has released former Mungiki Leader Maina Njenga on bond.

Kibelyon restrained him from making statements relating to the case or contacting prosecution witnesses failure to which the bond would be cancelled.

He was released on Sh100,000 bond with an alternative of Sh50,000 cash bail.

He was charged with being a member of an unauthorised group namely Mungiki, having records relating to the group and addressing an illegal meeting at his home in the Wanyoro area of Bahati Sub-County, Nakuru.

The other charge stated that he attended the said illegal meeting, allowed the meeting to take place at his home and provided his premises for the meeting.

Njenga who is charged together with 11 others not before court denied committing the offences.

He was represented by lawyers Martha Karua, George Wajackoya, Orlale Cheche, Ndegwa Njiru and Simon Mbugua.

Also present in court were opposition Politicians Jeremiah Kioni, former Cabinet Secretary, Eugene Wamalwa and Former Murang'a Governor Mwangi wa Iria.

Lawyer Ndegwa had sought orders to have a section of government leaders barred for making inflammatory statements against their client.

He cited a recent meeting in Thika where Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua made prejudicial statements about Njenga.

The magistrate declined to grant the orders saying that no evidence had been provided to prove the allegations.

The matter will be mentioned on June 20 for further directions.
