Ruto lauded for nominating Haji for NIS director general

Elders from Northern Kenya have applauded President William Ruto’s nomination of Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji as the new Director General of the National Intelligence Service.

The news was received with great excitement in his Garissa home county.

The elders who spoke in Garissa town said Haji’s nomination is an outcome of his unwavering dedication and a strong commitment to delivering results.

“As residents of Garissa and the larger North Eastern Region, we appreciate the nomination of our son to head the intelligence agency by President Ruto. This confirms that the Head of State has confidence in us and we are promising that our son shall deliver,” said Amey, one of the clan elders.

They also said the president could now count on the Garissa community in any plan he has for the country.

Haji will return to the National Intelligence Service after six years as the Director of Public Prosecution should he receive parliamentary approval.

President William Ruto on Tuesday, May 16 nominated Haji as the new DG for NIS.

"Consequently, it is notified that Excellency the President has, In accordance with Section 7 (1) of the National Intelligence Service Act, nominated Mr Noordin Hajl, CBS, for appointment as the Director-General of the National Intelligence Service," Ruto said.

His nomination came ahead of the retirement of Major-General  Philip Wachira Kameru, the outgoing director-general.

Ahmed Duale Ahmed, the chairman of Ewaso Nyiro North Development Authority and a clan elder in Garissa, described Mr Haji’s nomination as the best reward for the county.

“Haji is a career civil servant and his performance record is known. We believe he will deliver in his new appointment by the President,” Mr Ahmed said.

Before he was DPP, Haji served as deputy director of the Counter Organised Crime Unit within the National Intelligence Service.

Haji had three more years to serve as the ODPP.
