Twenty firearms were on Tuesday, May 9, surrendered to police in Kakong, Turkana county.

Another AK47 rifle was also recovered in Tiaty, Baringo county, where two suspects were arrested, police said.

This marked a major milestone in the campaign to recover illegal weapons from the area.

Police said the rifle, which had an empty magazine, was used during the April 12, robbery at Kiserian in Marigat subcounty where 70 cows were stolen and a man shot dead.

On April 13, the area chief Bismark Murlem reported that the body of Collins Kukat Kwonyiko, aged 28, was discovered on his farm within Kanyumbi village.

Detectives visited the scene and established that the deceased was shot by bandits who had raided the Kiserian area and drove away with 70 heads of cattle.

Immediately, three suspects were identified and a manhunt launched. Two of them were finally arrested on May 9.

Police also said the firearms were surrendered to the National Government Administration and National Police Service officers during a public baraza held at Kakong trading centre on Tuesday.

The meeting was attended by the Turkana Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai, County Commissioner Jacob Ouma, county and subcounty Intelligence Committee members, Turkana Woman Representative Cecilia Asinyen Ngetit, local MCAs and county employees.

Security agencies are mounting an operation in the area in a hunt for illegal guns.

More than 200 weapons have been recovered in the campaign over the last four months.

Multi-agency teams are on the ground for the operation prompted by increased cases of armed banditry.

Despite the campaign, the gangs still attack villages for livestock.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki says they will permanently deploy the teams on the ground to address the menace.
