Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has commended President William Ruto for promoting and appointing Gen Francis Ogolla as the new Chief of Defence Forces.

Ngunyi said owing to his personal interactions with Gen Ogolla, he stands out as a refined soldier fit for the post.

"Congratulations Gen Ogolla for your appointment as Chief of Defence Forces. I interacted with him when we both served Uhuru Kenyatta. He is an elegant soldier and a credible Christian," he said.

Gen Ogolla is the first soldier from the Nyanza region to ascend to the post of Chief of Defence Forces.

His appointment came as a surprise to many considering Gen Ogolla was extensively mentioned by former IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati as among the people who tried to persuade him to alter the August 9 presidential election results at the Bomas of Kenya.

Ngunyi lauded Ruto for going above tribe by appointing Gen Ogolla to the post, a man he described as a "credible Christian".

"President Ruto did not appoint a Kalenjin like any Banana Republic would do. Good move, Sir," he said in a tweet on Friday.

The new General takes over from General Robert Kibochi who has left the force upon attainment of the following his mandatory retirement age of 62 years.

Prior to his appointment, Ogolla was the Vice Chief of the Defence Force.

He rose through the ranks to become a Major General and on July 15,2018, he was appointed the Commander Kenya Air Force where he served for three years.
