National Assembly Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss Shollei has challenged governors to focus on enhancing and growing their own revenue streams.

Shollei said this aims at sustaining the budgets of their devolved units.

“If counties grow their own source revenues, we will not have the wrangles we keep seeing every year," Shollei said.

"It is not enough for governors to keep demanding more money, while they do not demonstrate how much they can raise from local sources."

She was speaking at a breakfast meeting organised by the Pan African Congress Kenya chapter on Thursday.

The Uasin Gishu Woman Representative said growing own-source revenue is one of the surest ways of boosting and strengthening devolution.

“Apart from demanding for more allocation of funds, I want to challenge our governors to reveal to Kenyans the plans and the efforts they are making around revenue enhancement,” Shollei said.

County governments and the National Treasury have been locked in a stalemate over the delayed disbursement of funds.

Recently, Council of Governors chairperson Anne Waiguru urged the state to release all the monies owed to the devolved units.

Waiguru warned that county governments could grind to a halt if Treasury fails to release the Sh125.8 billion that they are owed in arrears for the months of January, February, March, and April.
