Foreign and Diaspora Affairs CS Alfred Mutua has called on Kenyans in Sudan to register with Kenya's embassy for evacuation purposes.

In a statement on Monday, Mutua the ministry is in the process of evacuating more than 300 registered Kenyans in Sudan.

"I am calling upon all Kenyans in Sudan who have not registered their details with the embassy to do so immediately so as to enable us plan for their evacuation too," he said.

The CS thanked neighbouring countries which have opened up their borders to enable Kenyans cross as they flee fighting.

He said the countries have also granted permission for Kenyan planes to overfly their airspace.

Earlier, Mutua said the Ministry has already engaged three evacuation programmes for Kenyans in Sudan.

He noted that the first programme has seen 29 Kenyan students cross the border to Ethiopia where they will fly to Addis Ababa then to Nairobi.

The Foreign Affairs CS said the third programme will see a large number of Kenyans airlifted back into the country.

"A larger group of Kenyans are on a well planned programme of travel and we will have two aircrafts airlift them from Port Sudan to Jeddah and thereafter travel to Nairobi by Kenya Airways.  We estimate to airlfit 300-400 Kenyans this way, if not more."

Several countries have evacuated diplomats and their citizens from Sudan's as fierce fighting continues to rage in the capital Khartoum.

A vicious power struggle between the regular army and a powerful paramilitary force has led to violence across the country.

The power struggle has seen heavy bombardment in the capital city, with hundreds killed and thousands more injured.
