At least ten children have died from the Rotavirus infection which was pronounced in Mombasa by the county boss Abdulswamad Nassir on April 11.

Rotavirus is a contagious virus that causes diarrhoea mostly in children under the age of five.

Speaking to journalists in his office, Nassir said the county had confirmed three cases out of 75 which were being investigated at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital.

According to Kenya Red Cross and the department of health, out of the 10 reported cases, seven are male.

Kenya Red Cross Mombasa chairman Mahmoud Noor said three are from Kisauni Subcounty, two from Nyali and one from Likoni subcounty.

“Out of the 10 deaths, four deaths are unaccounted for due to incomplete data in terms of where they are coming from. And this is a cumulative figure since the outbreak was reported in Mombasa,” he said.

Mombasa is one of the counties affected by the ongoing heavy rains in different parts of the county.

So far, the county has recorded 217 affected households which sums up to approximately 1,626 community members directly affected and 25,000 people affected indirectly.

Mombasa Disaster Management Committee which is composed of the County government of Mombasa and the Kenya Red Cross said 22 houses in Miritini Madukani, Mburukenge, Kipevu and Chaani area in Changamwe subcounty were completely damaged by heavy floods.

Some 35 houses were partially damaged within the same area.

Kenneth Ambani, the County Executive Committee Member of Public Service Administration and Social Services said that currently, 65 households are being hosted at Kipevu primary.

"For the last three days most of us have not had sleep because we have been trying to run up and down to ensure that the Mombasa residents who gave us the mandate to take care of them are well taken care of,” he said.

The CEC said heavy rains have resulted in floods affecting the vulnerable in six subcounties of Likoni, Mvita, Nyali, Kisauni, Changamwe and Jomvu.
