Two people have so far died of cholera following an outbreak in Kisumu County.

This is according to the county health CEC Gregory Ganda.

He noted that the county has so far confirmed seven cases of cholera and all are currently admitted and undergoing treatment at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

"The first case of Cholera outbreak was from outside Kisumu which was on April 13 and the person died while the second death was of an old man a local though we did not take it to the lab to confirm," he said.

He noted that the number of suspected cases has risen to 52.

He further disclosed that most of the cases are coming from Nyalenda  A and Nyalenda B.

Others are in Kisumu East areas and Kisumu Central.

The CEC noted that with the rains being witnessed across, most of the pit latrines in the slums end up collapsing or end up being overflown and the various water sources are contaminated.

Ganda noted that they have done activations of the emergency operational centres, that deal with such emergencies with a team of experts who meet daily to review cases of admission and interventions being taken.

"Every morning and evening we have a meeting and we have invited our partners Unicef, West Kenya Redcross, and World Health Organization to help us deal with situation."
