Act on rising road accidents - Cabinet orders Murkomen, Kindiki

The Cabinet on Tuesday directed the ministries of Transport and Interior to take remedial action and contain rising road accidents in the country.

The ministries are headed by Kithure Kindiki (Interior) and Kipchumba Murkomen (Transport).

In the meeting chaired by President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi, the Cabinet expressed concern over the rise in road carnages and condoled with families of students who died in Naivasha. 

"The directive reiterated that the traffic code must be enforced in a manner that enhances road safety, especially during this long rains season," a Cabinet dispatch released after the meeting said.

At least six students died on the spot Tuesday morning following a grisly road accident at Delamare in Naivasha on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.

They were travelling from Western Kenya to Nairobi when the accident occurred.

The accident which involved a lorry and a matatu that was carrying the students left seven other people with injuries.

In Murang'a, one person died while several passengers sustained serious injuries after a matatu collided with a lorry near Maragua along Kenol Murang’a road.

The loss of the students' lives came just over two weeks after another accident claimed the lives of 17 people including 10 students of Pwani University.

The accident occurred in the Kayole area near Naivasha on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway on March 30 as the students and teachers headed to Trans Nzoia for a games tournament. 

On Monday, four people also died in another grisly road accident involving a bus along the Eldoret- Nakuru Highway.

The accident occured in Mau Summit after the Tahmeed Bus rolled several times.
