Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda has responded after Governor Anyang Nyong'o announced the suspension of anti-government protests in the city.

Ojienda stated that suspending the demos has always been his position alongside other elected leaders from Nyanza.

He thanked Nyong'o for the move, saying that he had finally seen the light.

"Our position has always been that these demonstrations are not sustainable. Thank you Governor Anyang Nyong'o for seeing the light," Ojienda said on Wednesday.

The senator is among the nine rebel ODM MPs who have been warming up to President William Ruto.

He says their relationship with Ruto is not self-seeking as they are only after development from the Kenya Kwanza administration.

On Wednesday, Nyong'o indefinitely suspended demonstrations in the county.

His announcement came hours before the planned protests by Azimio on Thursday.

The governor said the Azimio National Council in consultation with the Kisumu county executive had resolved that the Kisumu team will join demonstrations in Nairobi.

"The people of Kisumu should remain committed to the aspirations of Azimio and its campaign for a better Kenya," the governor said.

"I would like to appeal to the people to work in tandem with enforcement officers to maintain peace and security in our county."

He said the people of Kisumu have spoken loudly and clearly on these very serious matters and have delivered their petitions to the government.

"We have delivered the message and expressed our resolve to stand with the Azimio La Umoja leader, Raila Amollo Odinga in his quest for Justice," he said.

Kisumu has experienced violent protests, that saw protesters clash with the police and some properties destroyed.
