Most parts of the country have received heavy rain for the past one week.
The rains have come a great relief after months of drought since 2022 which devastated millions of people, especially poor peasant farmers.
In most counties in Northern Kenya, floods have displaced people and killed livestock that survived drought. The floodwaters should be put to good use.
What the county and national governments need to do right now is to put in place measures and ways of harvesting the rainwater.
Kenya is too dependent on rain-fed agriculture and with climate change effects, it is obvious rain patterns have become unpredictable.
It is for this reason that county and national governments must prioritize rainwater harvesting for future use and gradually educate the public on new sustainable farming methods.
The rainwater, if harvested, will help farmers throughout the season for both crops and livestock during drought.
Kenyans, too, have a duty to demand of county governments to ensure governors plan for future drought rather than wait to pray our way out of failed or depressed rains.
It is only through rainwater harvesting, providing fertilizer and educating farmers on sustainable farming that Kenya can end the perennial food scarcity challenge.
