Muslims for Human Rights (Muhuri) has picked retired Chief Justice Willy Mutunga as the chairperson of the board of directors.

Mutunga served as the country's Chief Justice from 2011 to 2016 when he retired early to pave the way for the recruitment of his successor.

Following his election, Mutunga will now take over from long-serving chairperson Khelef Khalifa.

In publication in the local dailies, Muhuri said Mutunga brings a grasp of matters of human rights and the law.

Muhuri said Mutunga's credentials will be critical in the pursuit of its mission of fighting impunity.

"He brings an immense wealth of experience especially in the civil society and human rights sectors,"the notice reads in part.

According to Muhuri, Mutunga's track record of defending the law will help boost constitutionalism in Kenya.
