President William Ruto is set for a three-day visit to the Kisii and South Nyanza region starting Thursday, where he is expected to dish out goodies to the residents.

State House spokesman Hussein Mohammed said the head of state will start his visit at Kisii and Nyamira counties before proceeding to Kuria East and West constituencies in Migori county.

The President is also expected to inspect and commission several projects, which include the launch of upgrading of the 33.3km Gekano-Rigoma-Amabuko road, as well as Nyabohanse-Kumumwamu and Nyaburu-Oboke-Ragwe roads.

Hussein said Ruto will also commission the Kegati water project in Kisii and proposed affordable housing project in Sironga, Nyamira county.

Hussein, who is part of the advance team in the region, said the Ruto government has already launched the distribution of subsidised fertiliser and farm inputs to the farmers in the area.

He further said the government had subsidised the fertiliser cost to farmers, reducing the price from Sh7,500 to Sh3,500.

The State House spokesperson said to get rid of cartels and brokers from exploiting the fertiliser programme, the government has already listed five million farmers, and that the distribution of the commodity is being managed and implemented digitally.

For this long rain season, Hussein said, the government is committed to supply more than 300,000 metric tonnes of various types of fertilisers.

As of Wednesday morning, he said, some 1,061,152 50kg bags of fertilisers had been bought by farmers at the subsidised price of Sh3,500 per bag, throughout the country, with the transacted amount standing at Sh3.7 billion.

A total of 250,831 50kg bags are still in stock, with 1,037,019 e-vouchers having been issued.

In Kisii county, he said, 134,538 farmers have registered and 7,800 fertiliser bags have been supplied so far.

In Nyamira, 80,170 farmers have registered and 2,780 bags have been supplied to them.

The spokesman said the farmers must be registered to access the fertilisers at the Kenya National Trading Corporation and National Cereals and Produce Board stores.
