“When someone dies under unclear circumstances, that becomes a Government issue and we can’t go against that at any point,” Mchana said.
The pathologist was addressing the press at the Coptic mission morgue where the body of the late William Mayenga was being preserved before the postmortem.
“We have concluded the postmortem and found the bullet that was used to kill the slain student. We have handed it over to the Criminal Investigation Department in presence of the family, IPOA, Human rights and other interested bodies to go on with the investigation,” Mchana said.
“My work is to do the postmortem then hand over the report to the relevant authorities and wait to testify in court,” he added.
However, the security agents declined to give their comment citing that they need room for investigations before giving out any information to the public.
The body of the late William Mayenga, a third-year student at Maseno University has been transported to Kisii ahead of burial arrangements.
According to a police report, during the protests, they invaded the Sairam supermarket, in Maseno town and other business premises along Kisumu-Busia road.
The report further indicated that they went ahead and lit bonfires and barricaded the road with stones.
"After some time, the students started pelting stones at the police line where they damaged window panes of 10 houses and the police station," it read in parts.
It further indicated that the protesters overpowered the officers who were manning the station after the officers ran out of tear gas canisters and blanks.
The report stated that six police officers were injured during the skirmishes.
"This prompted the officers who had been sent out to quell the intruders to fire live bullets. Consequently, the third-year student was hit in the neck," the police report read.
The family of the late is calling for justice to be served for their son who was to graduate next year.
He was pursuing a degree in Education.
