Azimio convoy has been teargassed in Kiambu town in what seems to be attempts to scuttle the anti-government protests.

The opposition chief Raila Odinga's convoy took a detour to Kiambu town around 4pm after information went round that he would be met with opposition in Kiambaa subcounty.

Raila then addressed residents in Kiambu town before handing the microphone Martha Karua who later handed it to Kalonzo Musyoka.

Soon after Musyoka spoke, he gave the microphone to George Wajackoyah before a teargas canister was hurled at the residents who were listening to the Azimio leaders.

The residents later scampered for safety with the origin of the teargas still unknown.

Youths guarding the Azimio leaders calmed the situation by putting out the teargas smoke with water before the speeches by the Azimio leaders resumed.

The leaders condemned the incident, saying Kiambu town is the only place that they have been teargassed after a successful week-long rallies across the country.

"By throwing teargas at us, it shows that we are right at what we are doing," Senator Ledama Ole Kina said.

Musyoka said that it was wrong to throw teargas at Kenyans and the former Prime Minister. He assured Kenyans that Monday protests will be peaceful.

"If there will be destruction of property during our protest, it will be caused by police and we warn the police to desist from throwing teargas at Kenyans," he said.

We love our motherland. You cannot throw teargas at the people to restrain Raila from going to his rallies."

Eugene Wamalwa said Kiambu people are the first lot of Kenyans to 'taste' teargas for a long time.

"When the third liberation comes we will remember that the first teargas [hurled at] the people was in Kiambu town. They want the people to disperse so that we do not tell them the truth," he said.

Raila, who also condemned the teargas incident, called on Kenyans to carry a white cloth, which will signify they are in peaceful demonstrations calling for their rights.
