The Cholera death toll has risen to six in Machakos, Health executive Daniel Yumbya has said.

Yumbya said they included four cases that occurred in Mavoko subcounty last week and two other cases registered in Kangundo.

He said those who died in Kangundo were people who had travelled from different locations.

“One person had run away from Mavoko. Our team traced the person but on examination his results were negative. The efforts that have been made by the county government in containing the Cholera outbreak have bore fruits,” Yumbya said.

Yumbya addressed the press during a joint presser with Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi at the latter’s office in Machakos on Wednesday.

He said there were no new reported cases in Mavoko subcounty.

“Cumulatively, people who have shown symptoms of Cholera stands at 46 in Mavoko and three in Kangundo totalling 51 persons,” Yumbya said.

He said most of the patients who were admitted had been discharged in stable conditions.

“We are remaining with only six patients admitted in hospitals; three in Mavoko Level 4 Hospital and two in Machakos Level 5 Hospital,” Yumbya said.

The Health executive had earlier announced the four deaths that had occurred in Mlolongo and Athi River.

He said most of the cases were located in Mlolongo, Jua Kali, Kwa Mang'eli, Kanaani, Califonia, KMC, Site, Njoguini, Ngimu, Slota and Sokoni estates.

Yumbya said the deaths in Mavoko were registered between March 6 and March 10.

"From March 6 to date, Mavoko subcounty has attended to 32 suspected cases of which 12 samples were collected for laboratory confirmation. Out of these cases, four deaths have occurred with three cases availing themselves for treatment in critical conditions," Yumbya said.

He lauded Governor Wavinya Ndeti and her deputy for their support towards efforts to contain the disease.

Yumbya said the devolved government had embarked on serious door-to-door public sensitization campaigns, especially in Mavoko and Kangundo subcounties on keeping safe practices in terms of sanitation.

He said they had distributed soaps, jerricans, drugs and tablets for water purification alongside distributing water to affected households using water boozers.

Yumbya said hawking and vending of food remained banned in Athi River ward as had earlier been directed through an order.

“We shall monitor the situation until this weekend. If we don’t get any new cases in Mavoko, we are likely to lift the ban by Saturday,” Yumbya said.
