Police have recovered two motorcycles that were used by gunmen to escape from a scene of robbery in Mununga, Murang'a county.

The two motorcycles were recovered within Aberdare Forest moments after the robbery at Unaitas Bank Mununga branch.

The team investigating the incident said they also recovered six spent cartridges of AK47 rifle and seven for G3 rifle.

Murang'a police boss Ali Nuno said they did not recover the stolen cash and police rifle. He added they were yet to know how much was stolen.

One man was shot and injured in the Saturday morning drama. Police said two men who wore black private security uniforms with reflectors pretending to be hawkers selling mobile phones approached the two police officers who were manning the bank and started fighting them using crude weapons.

They were joined by four other thugs who were armed with AK-47 rifles.

One of the thugs shot on the ground near one of the policemen. The other police officer managed to remove and pull out a G3 rifle loaded with magazine and threw it in a nearby bush.

The other police was hit on the head with a blunt object prompting him to surrender his firearm loaded with 20 bullets. Two thugs stormed the bank hall and shot aimlessly shattering windowpanes and damaging some computers.

After a few minutes, according to witnesses and police, the gang walked out carrying a sack suspected to be full of money.

Members of the public had by then gathered outside the premises following the earlier gunshots. This prompted the gang to again fire in the air to disperse the mob, injuring one man in the thigh.

They then dashed a few meters ahead and boarded two waiting motorcycles and rode off.The motorcycles were later recovered in the nearby Aberdare Forest.

The incident comes a few days after a gang attacked two police officers who were manning a roadblock and disarmed one of them.

On February 25, the gang accosted the two police officers near Njora Secondary School gates and after beating them, escaped with a loaded AK47 rifle. The rifle is yet to be recovered.

Kigumo MP John Munyoro noted security gaps in the constituency following the other attack two weeks ago.

“I have contacted security heads and an operation in pursuit of the six criminals. Who will protect the residents if even the police are not safe?” the MP said.

He promised to raise the matter in Parliament to seek clear answers from the Ministry of Interior.

“This clearly indicates there are major security gaps that need to be addressed urgently. The Ministry of Interior must look into this matter holistically and address it with the seriousness and urgency it deserves," he said.
