14 Baringo schools closed due to banditry attacks opened - Kindiki

The government has reopened 14 out of 21 schools that had been closed in Baringo due to banditry attacks.

The schools are in Baringo South and Baringo North constituencies.

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki said the bandits had turned one of the schools into their home.

"One classroom was the house of the head of the bandits. Standard Seven was the home of the first wife and Standard Six was the bedroom of the second wife," the CS said.

 

Kindiki said that the government will reopen all the schools that had been closed.

He said the government has secured Sh100 million to renovate the classrooms that had been taken over by the bandits.

"We are going to reopen all the schools, that I can assure you," Kindiki said.

The CS spoke when he appeared before the senate National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity committee on Wednesday.

He narrated how bandits took over schools and brought their families to stay in them.

“One of the schools was taken over by bandits and the classrooms became the home of the bandits. Class Eight, became the bedroom of the head of the family, Class Seven became the bedroom of the first wife, Class Six became the bedroom of the second wife and Class Five became the bedroom of the firstborn,”  Kindiki addd.

Several schools in the county had closed down due to insecurity associated with banditry attacks.

In November 2022, President William Ruto assured the residents of Kerio Valley that his government will take decisive measures to ensure security and peace prevail in the region. 

"We will ensure this region is peaceful. We want our children to go to school and the people to focus on meaningful economic activities," he said.

The National Police Service had beefed up security in Baringo County ahead of next week's school reopening.

The Service said National Police Reservists have been deployed to the area to support the Rift Valley multi-agency security team
