Council of Governors Chair and Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru on Tuesday officially launched a campaign against cyberbullying.

Waiguru flagged off the campaign dubbed 'Stop Cyberbullies Now'.

The campaign by Echo Network Africa was supported by Hanns Seidel Foundation.

The Governor said that she will support the campaign because she understands what it means to be targeted online.

"As we celebrate the positive impact of technology, we must also acknowledge the challenges that come with it, particularly in the form of cyberbullying," she said.

She said that in Kenya, women leaders have been particularly vulnerable to cyberbullying.

"It can take many forms including harassment, intimidation, and threats of violence," she said.

"In my professional career, as you all know, especially in my gubernatorial journey, and now as the first female chairperson of the Council of Governors, I have faced my fair share of cyberbullying," she said.

She said that the internet has provided a platform for individuals to anonymously attack, insult, and harass others.

"I have personally been the target of numerous hurtful and offensive comments on social media, which have ranged from personal attacks on my appearance to attacks on my work," she said.

She said that the campaign is therefore a very personal issue to her.

"Many leaders in Kenya and around the world have faced similar attacks. Cyber Bullying can have a devastating impact on mental health and well-being and can even discourage women from participating in public," she said.

The campaign is part of the Pre-International Women’s Day Event by Echo Network Africa.

The March 2 celebrations theme is DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality.
