After decades of waiting, the National Police Service's dream of having an own-constructed hospital to cater for serving and retired personnel has come true.

This comes as President William Ruto is set to commission a police hospital at the Border Patrol Unit campus in Kanyonyo, Kitui.

Last month, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki announced that Border Police Hospital in Kanyonyo will be commissioned this month.

NPS had every year since 2,000 advertised tenders for the construction of the facility probably in Nairobi even as their personnel continued to get injured and others die due to lack of proper medical attention.

The construction started in 2020 when Deputy Inspector General of Police Noor Gabow and his team met and decided to invest a contribution from the personnel in the project.

The police service used a welfare fund collected for almost a year to start the hospital project.

With a contribution of Sh50 from each junior officer, the Administration Police Service started the construction.

The hospital was initially meant to attend to officers injured on the frontline, especially at the Kenya-Somalia border but now officials say all personnel even those from other places including Nairobi will be referred there.

NPS has been taking their injured personnel to the Kenya Defence Forces Memorial Hospital in Nairobi and private facilities.

The KDF hospital is at times overwhelmed because it is small.

After the launch, the police hospital will be a huge relief for the service.

Services to be offered at the facility include outpatient, infant, mental and rehabilitative services, maternity, laboratory, pharmaceutical, dental health, critical care, surgical and mortuary.

The facility will also offer counselling services to the police.
