Professor Mary Walingo has been reinstated as the Maasai Mara University vice-chancellor but will remain suspended pending the conclusion of a graft case against her filed in 2020.
The university's council chairman Kennedy Kerei said in a statement the decision is in compliance with a directive by the Public Service Commission of September 6, 2022.
"Pursuant to the said decision, the Maasai Mara University Council wishes to communicate to you its resolution made on the 15th of February 2023 to reinstate you on suspension," Kerei said in a letter addressed to the VC.
According to the directive by the PSC, Walingo is supposed to be paid half her salary during the pendency period of the case against her or until such a time her contract is lawfully terminated.
"In this regard, your name will henceforth be included in the payroll but you will remain on suspension as per the terms of the decision by the Public Service Commission," the council chairman added.
In this regard, Kerei said her accrued dues since she was suspended are being calculated for purposes of ensuring she is paid as ordered by the court on January 19, 2023.
The court overruled the decision by the Maasai Mara University to terminate her employment.
Walingo was sent packing in 2019 after a Citizen TV expose dubbed the Mara Heist implicated her in the Sh177 million corruption scandal.
She appealed the decision with the Public Service Commission which ordered her reinstatement to office pending the conclusion of the anti-corruption case against her.
Prof Walingo later moved to court after the university failed to reinstate her as directed by the PSC in September 2022 leading to the issuance of fresh orders by a Nakuru court this January.
"The Petitioner submitted that it has made out a case in her favour, which was well supported by the fourth respondent and unopposed by the other respondents therefore the application should be allowed with costs,” Employment and Labour Relations judge Justice Hellen Wasilwa ruled.
