Ruto to attend 36th AU summit in Ethiopia on Friday

He is expected to moderate a meeting to review the outcome of COP27 for Africa.

President William will on Friday travel to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for the 36th Ordinary Session of the African Union Heads of State and Government Summit. 

The meeting will be held from February 17 to 19, 2023.

A statement from State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said Ruto will join other regional leaders for discussions aimed at fast tracking Intra-Trade in Africa.

This is through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework.

"Additionally, peace and security in the continent, climate change, food and health security will be discussed," Mohamed said.

He added that Ruto is expected to advocate for the continent's potential to lead the world.

He will also demonstrate that Africa can industrialise, thrive and prosper in a low carbon and sustainable manner.

Further, the head of state is expected to moderate a meeting to review the outcomes and implications of COP27 for Africa.

The meeting will also discuss the way forward for the key global events setting the milestones for climate action and reform of the continent and financial architecture in 2023.

The President will do this in his capacity as the chair and coordinator of the Committee of the African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC).

During the Summit, Ruto will invite the African and global leadership to the Climate Action Summit in Nairobi.

It will be held between September 4 and 6, 2023.
