Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has pledged to start a free sanitary pad drive.

He lauded UDA nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba for walking to the Senate chambers in "blood-stained" clothes on Tuesday.

The Senator was advocating for free sanitary pad distribution through a motion to girls who can't afford the basic items every menstrual cycle.

"Senator Gloria Orwoba. That was bold and provocative. To change some things you must make people uncomfortable and you did!" Sakaja said on Wednesday.

"I'll do my part in Nairobi for our girls."

Senator Orwoba attracted attention to herself on Tuesday, by having on a red stained white trouser, which she revealed was artificial colouring.

In her motion, Orwoba wants the Ministry of Public Service, Gender and Affirmative Action to facilitate provision of feminine hygiene products in all public schools.

She also wants the Ministry to ensure all schools that do not have bathrooms that facilitate privacy, cleanliness or proper disposal of hygiene products are properly equipped.

"The Ministry should create awareness and take advocacy measures on reproductive health issues related to period poverty," she added.

Further, Orwoba wants the Ministry to ensure that sanitary products will be obtained timely, consistently and in a way that respects the dignity of the concerned persons.
