The government was forced to intervene after students from Arnesen's High School in Burnt Forest in Uasin Gishu County trekked for over 40 kilometres to Eldoret town in protest over challenges they face at the school.

They were protesting over absentee teachers, being denied access to the school library, insufficient toilets, lack of water, and small food rations, among other grievances.

The enraged students walked for over three hours to the Eldoret to seek an audience with Ainabkoi Sub-County Commissioner Charles Laboso.

Speaking outside Laboso's office, the students said they began trekking at midnight and arrived at the Eldoret-Kaptagat junction by 8.30 am.

"We were forced to walk for a long distance because our efforts to have the issues we raised resolved internally had been futile," said one of them.

Laboso addressed the students urging them to remain calm as the government followed up on their grievances.

He said the school administration had been summoned to explain the situation.

Later, Laboso organised for buses from schools in the town to ferry back the more than 300 students.
