The court will today rule on whether it will allow police to detain 10 people suspected of being in a fraud syndicate that obtained over Sh449 million from Fuliza.

The state had asked the court to detain the 10 for seven days to allow them complete investigations.

The suspects namely Isaac Kipkemoi, Gideon Rono, Moses Rono, Collins Kipyegon, Maxwell Ributhu, Edwin Cheruiyot, Gedion Kiru, Peter Wambui, Brenda Chepng'eno and Linda Cherono are believed to be members of a fraud syndicate that obtained Sh449.6 million through a popular mobile phone platform supported by mobile communication service provider, Safaricom.

The court heard that the service provider, through its Fuliza overdraft service, lost the money in a well-coordinated scheme by the 10 suspects.

"The complainant at NCBA bank requested this unit to carry on investigations into fraudulent transactions perpetrated through their digital borrowing scheme," the investigating officer said.

According to the police, the suspects used more than 123,000 Safaricom lines to borrow money from Fuliza in January 2022.

The suspects were found in possession of 3,000 Safaricom and Airtel SIM cards, 7 laptops, more than 40 mobile phones, 10 IDs, and 14 Safaricom registering machine assorted electronics and motor vehicles.

Elsewhere, the hearing of the late Kabete MP George Muchai's murder case resumes today.

In the case, seven accused persons were charged with the murder of the late legislator which occurred in 2015.

Muchai was shot dead at 5 am in the morning at GPO on Kenyatta Avenue while in his car.

In December last year, Justice Justus Bwononga who is the trial judge in the matter granted the accused persons Sh500,000 bail after being in remand for seven years.

The court had initially denied the seven suspects bail and directed them to be remanded until the end of the trial.

However, Justice Bwononga said he was persuaded to release the accused on bail due to the laxity exhibited by the prosecution in the trial that has taken seven years.
