Marakwest West Member of Parliament Timothy Toroitich has called on the Kenya Kwanza government to set up an active military camp in Kerio Valley to deal with rampant insecurity in the area.

Speaking to KBC on Friday, the MP decried the increased spate of attacks and insecurity being experienced in the region.

“I want to inform the nation that there is a problem in Kerio Valley. Kerio Valley as we speak is under a militia, a militia that must be controlled and stopped by this government. It is a sad, unfortunate situation happening in Kerio valley. In Marakwet, at least one person is killed each and every day,” he said.

He further urged President William Ruto to intervene in the matter by moving military barracks into the area in order to protect residents.

“My proposal as a leader in this, move military barracks to Kerio Valley. Create a buffer zone using the military. The IG and the office of the IG may not be able to solve this problem," he said.

"This problem in our collective opinion can only be solved by the military. The military needs to move out of the barracks and deal with the issue of Kerio valley because the situation is terrible,” he added.

The remarks come two days after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kindiki Kithure returned to the region in a bid to find solutions to deal with the cases of banditry and cattle rustling that have left scores of residents injured and others losing their lives.

In his tour, the CS reiterated the government’s resolve to enhance public safety and security.
