Mama Rachel holds talks with UNAIDS officials

First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto on Wednesday met with the Under Secretary General of the United Nations and the Executive Director of UNAIDS Winnie Byanyima.

She was accompanied by the UNAIDS regional director for Eastern and Southern Africa Anne Githuku-Shongwe and the UNAIDS country director Dr Lelin Tsehaiu.

They consulted on ways to reduce the infection of HIV/AIDS in the country.

The office of Mama Rachel committed to working with the organisation to address the issues leading to infections, through the implementation of agreed programs.

It will also work with the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD).

During the meeting, it was noted that there has been a reduction in infections by 50 per cent and HIV/AIDS deaths by 60 per cent.

The leaders however said there was a need to increase efforts in the fight against infections among young women. 

On Monday, Health CS Susan Wafula emphasized Kenya's commitment to playing a key role in the global response against HIV/AIDS.

"Kenya is exploring solutions such as local manufacturing of essential commodities, UHC and digitalisation of health services as a priority for the government," she said.

In December 2022, Kenya was elected vice chair of the UNAIDS Programme Coordination Board, putting her firmly on the decision table of the key global decision-making agency.
