A woman who had been employed as an accountant of a city Sacco was Wednesday charged with allegedly defrauding a Sacco a tune of Sh27 million contrary to section 281 of the penal code.

Bancy Kabugi Njagi was charged before Kibera senior principal magistrate Ectina Rihana where she denied the charges

The court heard that the accused person allegedly committed the offence between January 1, 2012, and July 2021 at Tetra Pak Sacco in Nairobi within Nairobi County.

She is accused of stealing Sh27,077,026, the property of the said Sacco which came to her possession by virtue of the employment.

She was arrested and arraigned after the Sacco manager did some account reconciliation and later reported the matter to the DCI.

In court, Sacco’s lawyer, Akusala Boniface urged the court to grant her a strong bond on the ground that she was a flight risk.

Akusala said that the accused person had tried to escape the country to look for a job abroad.

He urged the court to grant her a bond of Sh5 million to safeguard her attendance in court.

Her lawyer,  however, rubbished the accusations and said that the accused person was a  law-abiding citizen and was not a flight risk.

He told the court that since the accused person was granted a police officer bail, she never ran away.

The magistrate released her on Sh4 million bond with an alternative cash bail of Sh3 million.

The magistrate directed that the matter be mentioned on February 15 for further directions.

He also directed that the accused person be supplied with witness statements and documentary evidence that the prosecution will rely on during the entire trial.
