A police officer who was off duty was hacked and killed in a fight in a bar in Vihiga.

The officer who was on leave had been at a bar when the incident happened.

Witnesses told police he picked up an argument with another man.

The man picked up a chair and hit the officer in the head flooring him before he escaped.

The officer was rushed to a local health centre where he succumbed to the injuries.

Witnesses told police the men had been partaking drinks at the joint at the time of the incident but they did not know what prompted the confrontation.

Police spokesperson Resila Onyango said they are investigating the matter. She added the suspect is known and will face the law.

“For now we don’t know the reasons that led to the fight that turned fatal but our teams are pursuing the matter,” she said.

Meanwhile, a police officer is fighting for his life in hospital after a failed suicide in Ngong, Kajiado.

Police who attended the scene said the officer stabbed himself in the stomach, neck and left hand.

Instead, he screamed in pain seeking help. Neighbours rushed to his house where they found him in pain following the incident.

He was later rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital and admitted in serious condition.

It is not clear what triggered the move but police said they are investigating it.

Cases of suicide among police officers have been on the rise amid calls to address the trend.

Officials blame exposure to trauma as the leading cause of the trend.

Police authorities have launched measures to address the menace including the establishment of a directorate to focus on mental health among the officers in the 100,000 strong officers.
